Messi Backs Web3 Soccer Game Startup Matchday
Matchday, a football-focused Web3 gaming company, has raised $21 million in a seed investment round. The firm will work with both FIFA and world stars, with the support of Lionel Messi’s VC company Play Time.
Matchday company announced that it has received a seed investment of 21 million dollars. The startup, which was founded to develop football-focused Web3 games, will also work with the venture capital firm owned by Lionel Messi. Among the companies participating in the seed investment round were Courtside Ventures, Greylock, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group and Horizons Ventures, in addition to Play Time, owned by Messi. Alexia Putellas, one of the Spanish Women’s National Team players, was chosen as the global ambassador of Matchday.

Derrick Ko, the CEO of Matchday company, said that they have received an official license from FIFA and that they have also reached an agreement with the footballers’ association FIFPRO on the subject of licensing. Sebastien de Halleux, who is the game manager of Matchday company, also comes to the fore with his experience. Halleux worked for many years on the FIFA series of the famous game developer company EA Sports.
As it is known, Messi takes an active role in NFT projects besides Web3. Messi, who is the brand ambassador of Sorare, the football fantasy game played with NFTs, and also an investment in the company, signed an agreement with the fan token platform Socios for $ 20 million last year.
