With the start of the upcoming MLB season in jeopardy, Topps continues its baseball-themed NFT sales. The NFT version of Mickey Mantle's baseball card has become one of the most expensive sports NFTs ever.
The first edition of the "Topps Timeless Series", the NFT of Mickey Mantle's 1952 baseball card, sold at OpenSea auction for 175 ETH (about $471,000 at the time of sale).
LeBron James NFT, which was previously in the NBA Top Shot collection, was also sold for $ 210,000 and created a great success.
The largest previous baseball NFT sale was with the acquisition of Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss. Winklevoss bought Yankees legend Lou Gehrig's iconic "luckiest man" speech NFT for $70,000. Mantle's sons expressed their satisfaction with the issue.
"This card has been part of my father's legacy for 70 years and it's incredible to see its continuing impact on collectors and baseball fans around the world. We are delighted to share this historic card with Topps in a new and exciting way through NFTs."
